January is a damp, cold and drizzly month in New York. Nevertheless, people walk the streets with the same purposeful strides as they do when the weather is fair. I was struck , watching this intersection near 53rd Street and fifth Avenue, with the isolation each person seemed to inhabit. It looked like they each were wrapped in a shell of protection, focussed on their phone conversations, thinking about work, all while avoiding the puddles of icy slush that pooled near the curb. In this image I repeated some of the walking businessmen. Strangely, there seemed to be a fashion of blue umbrellas that day. Was it a convention? I don't know. I decided to go with the blue umbrella motif, forming color scheme and an pattern of sorts for the painting.
