This painting captures a quiet Sunday at the beach, ith people relaxing in various ways, while the birds flock on the wet sand recently uncovered by the receding tide. The composition is a slow progression of diagonals toward the horizon. A seemingly simple picture, it was in fact very difficult to resolve. I had to set it aside for 4 months before I knew what to do to make the composition work. The horizon had been indistinct because of low-lying mist, but the long rectangle of the canvas and the sparse elements needed the horizon defined, I discovered.
After that the diagonal of beaten sand going from the left corner to the right had to be brought out . Then the composition started working.
I wanted to keep the feeling of clam and peace and that concept was my guide throughout the painting process.
