The Ca d Zan ia a Venetian style palace on Sarasota Bay. Built in the late 1920s by John and Mabel Ringling as their winter home. It is a constant source of inspiration for me and in this case, I was looking at the building from a vantage point that can only be seen from the water. As the sun was setting, it lit up the ornate architecture with warm colors and in the process, reflected off the many windows, giving the impression of fire inside them. I used gold as an under paint in the window areas, allowing some to show through, but in other places, painting over with various shades of reflected light. For the image to appear believable, everything had to have some orange in it, including the water. I worked especially on the trees to get them to glow in the orange light, but also convey trees and greenery. My tendency when painting the moon, is to make it as bright as possible, but in this case I realized it had to be very muted, just a few steps above the sky color, for it to work in the strange lighting I had going on.
