Sea Glass was created from a group of studies in pen and in oil that I did on a rough and fascinating beach at Great Harbor, Mt. Desert Island, Maine. Besides the interesting marina filled with lobster boats, the beach had several huge blocks of granite, just sitting there. Some, like these had thick chains attached to them through holes drilled through the middle, obviously for use in anchoring something. I was excited by the mass of these blocks and their relationship with the empty beach and the figure in the middle ground hunting sea glass. I was reminded looking at the moody scene with its long shadows, of paintings by the surrealist artist, De Circo.
