I was very taken with the harbor in a little seaside village in Maine, called Coreya. At low tide the rock stand like ponderous beached sea animal, while lumps of other granite boulders show only as bulges in the carpet of seaweed. I wanted to communicate my excitement about the place and every time during the painting process that it crept toward realism, I felt that excitement receding. So I fought back with raw brushstrokes and a whole range rough techniques to wrestle the awe back into the picture. A painting is about the artist as much as it is about the subject. Maybe more. This canvas has me in it, standing amongst the slippery rocks at low tide and I hope, some of the intensity I felt there.
