EDGE OF THE ATLANTIC was inspired by a lengthy stay in Maine, where my family has a house. The vast pile of rocks at Schoodic Point has long been a place of excitement and wonder for me. I visit it at least once a year, often more. Standing on the granite slabs and looking out at the ice cold Atlantic, I imagine looking across to France. The ocean swells roll in, sometimes 18 feet or more in height, crashing against the rocks with amazing chutes of spray. This painting records a misty, drizzly day, but the place has an infinte number of moods. If you visit on a windless summer day, it may seem very tame, but I tend to favor it after or during a storm, when it is at its most spectacular.
