This was painted on the rocks at Schoodic Point, maine a few yeas back. someone asked me how I could paint the water, which was always moving, The process seems to be recording images in the mind as you look at the scene and trying to capture it in paint. Back and forth; record, paint. But there is also strategy involved, For instance, I saw that the water in the foreground was deeper blue/green than in the distance, where sky was reflecting off of it. Because it was closer, I was looking down into it. I knew I had to establish that darker color before any waves ore other details were done. Artists are always measuring and strategizing. One thing that I realized while painting this is that in order to paint water, you have to be water in some sense. It sounds very zen and maybe it is. So there is a lot going on in a small painting of rocks and water!
