Sometimes on Siesta Beach you can find a group of you Mennonite kids playing volleyball in the hot Florida sun. There's a net, strung between two poles. I have seen them many times and they seem to really enjoy the game, always with the boys on one side and girls on the other side of the net. I have been doing a series of landscapes and scenes of Florida with gold skies. This image seemed to fit. I worked from a photo taken by my wife, Debbie some years ago. She was able to stay respectfully far enough away by using her long lens.
Working loosely from that picture, I focused on the intent stances of the young ladies, which their starched dresses couldn't conceal. The men are under no such dress code restrictions, at least as far as this game is concerned. I found the contrast between the males and the females very interesting. And of course I pushed the drama of the girls' hidden athleticism as much as possible.
