This painting was created many years ago and is now coming to light after taking a lot of paintings out of storage. It demonstrates my tendency to paint everyday "found"still life, in preference to highly staged compositions. I wanted to include the ordinary objects from my kitchen, including the plstic spray bottle and tupperware container. I think that everyday life can become almost invisible, because of its familiarity. I take a lot of effort to actually look at these things with an artistic eye.
In my classes, I tell my students to look dispassionately at objects in order to really see them. " be like a camera ", I say. The camera doesn't care what it is aimed at, it just captures what is there.
I also tell them to also be free with what they are painting. A contradiction, perhaps, but it translates to observing dispassionately but painting passionately.
