Clouds Of Augusr was something of a breakthrough for me. At the time I had always included landscape on paintings that seemed to really be about the sky and clouds. I decided with this painting, to just focus on the clouds, ignoring the landscape completely. The name refers to the amazing formations of cumulus clouds that can be seen over the gulf in the summer. They rise to vast proportions and catch the light as the cast shadows, creating a very dynamic sky that can be watched all day. I concentrated on communicating the feeling of the clouds passing overhead and receding into the distance. Clouds are the mountains of Florida, I decided. Whan the landscape lacks in elevation, it makes up in the spectacular skies seen almost every afternoon.
