When I lived in New York State's Hudson Valley, yard sales and lawn sales were a form of recreation. But a barn sale was special. You never knew what treasures the people might drag out from the depths of an old barn. This one was at a farm that dated back to the mid eighteenth century and the barn was probably the same vintage.
At first glance, this picture seems oddly divided in half, but there are compositional devices that relieve the design and prevent it from being static. The division between the gravel drive and the grass is at a slight angle. The barns have two sets of wide open doors, but one barn is smaller and shaded, the other, larger and in full sun.The implied symetry is interestingly softened.
