The Sno-Cone maker was working the customers going into the old Essex Street Market. It was a hot day and the shaved ice with sweet, colorful syrups seemed irresistible. I was interested in the whole scene around Essex Street back then, as itreminded me of markets I had seen elsewhere in South America.  My interest in pattern is evident in this painting, but it's the three faces forming a triple portrait that hold our attention.
