I painted ta small oil sketch of this on Monhegan Island. A while later in my studio, I painted this larger version. The sketch proved to be very helpful, not so much because of color or tone, but more because I had studied the sce ne for a good hour and a half.

Any plein air painter can tell you, a lot can change in an hour and a half!  For instance, the man sitting on the side of the boat, jumped down and walked away! The tide rose, the light and shadow changed.  It was a different experience painting the big one in my studio over a few days.  The photo didn't change. In fact it stayed the same as the exact moment  I took it.
